Meet Dr. Hal Stewart

meet-dr-hal-stewart

Dr. Hal Stewart has a longstanding commitment to the highest standards of general, cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry.

A biologic and systems-focused dentist, he believes that the focus of treatment should be to achieve and maintain a healthy and functioning chewing system. He believes that a healthy dentition is only a part of a healthy body, and so he also gives emphasis to treating problems such as neck and shoulder pain, headaches, clenching and grinding, that are often caused by dental problems.

Dr. Hal Stewart is one of fewer than 200 dentists worldwide to have completed the entire curriculum of the Orognathic Bioesthetics International (OBI) Foundation.

Since 2006, he has also served on the teaching faculty at the OBI Institute. He has also studied extensively at the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Studies and completed the Advanced Esthetic and Master Esthetic courses at the Las Vegas Institute for Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr. Stewart is the CEO of  The Stewart Center. He also lectures extensively, teaching dentists across the country and even around the world about advanced restorative and cosmetic dentistry.

He currently serves as a Mentor at the Schuster Center for Professional Development in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is also a past president and current board member of the Texas Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (TACD).

Dr. Stewart is also a member of the Orognathic Bioesthetics International, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the Academy of General Dentistry. And he is currently working towards his certification with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

In 2018, Dr. Stewart was privileged to be selected as a member of the prestigious American College of Dentists.

A message from Dr. Hal Stewart “Why I Became A Dentist?”

I became a dentist out of a sincere desire to help people. My sister worked for a dentist when she was in high school and I spent time in his office. He was a kind, caring man and he really enjoyed what he did. I didn’t think much about then, but I know he had a positive influence on me. When I went to college I joined the Health Care Pre-Professional Club and there I was influenced by professors and some wonderful friends I made who were pre-dental students.

Why BioRejuvenation Dentistry?

As is the case with any dentist, after dental school, my real education began. I sought out the finest post graduate teaching institutions all over the world because I had such a strong desire to learn more and be the very best I could be. I have studied and sought advanced training in the USA, Europe, Canada, and Brazil. My desire to learn more was fueled by my frustration with dentistry in general in that it seemed that I found most of my colleagues were only treating symptoms. For instance, if a tooth breaks, it’s automatically treated with a crown, instead of addressing the cause of why it broke in the first place. If a patient had TMJ problems, they are given medications and a night guard instead of first addressing the reason why they have TMJ pain in the first place. In the quest of seeking relief for my own tooth wear and chronic TMJ/headache issues I, along with several colleagues, perfected a treatment method developed on sound biologic principles. We call it BioRejuvenation dentistry.

In short, BioRejuvenation dentistry is a treatment system that addresses everything that is involved with the function of the mouth and not just teeth alone. By addressing the cause of the problem first, I can solve my patients’ discomfort, functional and cosmetic needs all at one time, with one treatment system.

This was a really special case for me because Sheri is my amazing hygienist! Before treatment, Sheri suffered from tooth wear, facial muscle tension, headaches, and TMJ pain. This caused decreased energy, discomfort, and poor sleep. I first stabilized her TMJ using the Condylar Centering Orthotic physical therapy, then a short period of Invisalign, and then restored the proper shape to the worn teeth with non-invasive composite resin. I did not have to grind down one tooth!! Now Sheri has a beautiful smile, but more importantly, her bite is comfortable and she no longer has headaches, muscle pain, or TMJ pain.

Stacy suffered from frequent headaches, joint pain and popping, and hypersensitive teeth. “My teeth hurt, and I am self-conscious,” said Stacy, “they are very thin and chipping. I don’t want to lose them, and I want to have a nice smile.” I placed Stacy in a C2O (Condylar Centering Orthotic) for 6 weeks followed by minimally invasive BioRejuvenation Dentistry. “Now my teeth don’t hurt at all, and I love to smile,” says Stacy. “Smiling is my favorite!”

I was honored to have an article published in the October 2018 issue of Dentistry Today on Utilizing Nanohybrid Flowable Composite Techniques. The BioRejuvenation case featured in this article illustrates the conservative, yet very significant dentistry that we can provide our patients. The key is being cognizant of the airway, making sure the joints are stable, and waxing and restoring once the joints have achieved their stable condylar position. Using biologic tooth form in creating anterior proprioceptive guidance, we can restore complex cases with minimal to no prepping, using only composite resin. It is the best of both worlds, beauty and function while being minimally invasive. For the complete article, click here: http://www.dentistrytoday.com/articles/10486

Hobbies & Family

I am passionate about health and I believe in being fit and active. I train almost daily, lifting weights and doing various cardiovascular exercises such as running, elliptical, stair master, and power walking. I have competed in body building contests as a 50+ year old!  I also believe in eating healthy while still enjoying an occasional indulgence of comfort food. A healthy body will serve one well their entire lifetime. We only have one body and we need to take care of it, and of course oral health plays a large part in one’s overall!
